You make beautiful things out of the dust…

As of late, my wife and I have a codeword that we like to use with one another. Actually, to be exact, it’s three words. We find ourselves uttering these codeword(s) to one another in moments when someone’s words lack substance. Whether it’s an excuse from someone about how they’re not available or endless babble about something meaningless to us or a preacher’s rambling about whatever.

Codeword: “Blah, blah, blah”

It’s our way of telling one another that it’s just empty…meaningless…taking up space for no reason…disconnected from our reality.

Yesterday, the codeword came out of my mouth once again. As I dialed through Laura’s iPod trying to find a song or two to enjoy on our journey down to Orange County to visit some friends, I landed on “Beautiful Things” by Gungor. I’ve been listening to this song alot lately. Sometimes, I’ll just listen to it over and over in my car as I drive to a client meeting.

“There’s something about this song that gives me hope. I was sitting there at church yesterday while they were playing those songs, and all I heard was blah, blah, blah. It’s not that I don’t believe the truths within the songs, but they just seem empty to me right now…disconnected from my reality.”

But…this song resonates in my soul. I sense God’s Presence when I hear this song…and it gives me hope for our/my future.

“Beautiful Things” by Gungor
All this pain
I wonder if I’ll ever find my way
I wonder if my life could really change at all
All this earth
Could all that is lost ever be found
Could a garden come up from this ground at all

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

All around
Hope is springing up from this old ground
Out of chaos life is being found in You

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

You make me new, You are making me new
You make me new, You are making me new
You are making me new

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

You make me new, You are making me new
You make me new, You are making me new

  1. the kids in my youth group learned it 2 summers ago at our national youth thingee. Our kids struggle with worship at times, and I struggle in leading them with songs that reach them. My pastor had me learn the song before they got home so we could do it at YG. It resonated with *me* greatly and was thrilled to be able to share this with them. When they heard the first riff, they were all "oh, I LOVE this song" and the kids who didn't go where "okay, whatever". But as we started singing…girls who normally never sing much had their eyes closed and were worshipping, and the kids who didn't go started "listening" to the song and the lyrics. By the end of the song, God had truly showed up to our hardened kids. And every time since, they still respond. Even new kids who have never heard it. I don't often say songs are "annointed" but to me, this song is really God-given. Yes, it's about "me", but it's about how He loves us and see's us as beautiful. In an ugly world, that's not such a bad thing, is it?

  2. I listen to this on Klove when I am working. I work in a daycare and I am there through nap time. 2 hrs of sitting quietly, looking out the large glass windows to the backdrop of God's creation. This sound makes me want to sing out loud and dance before my God and King!! It is simple and yet it speaks to who we are and who we are becoming as followers of Christ. Somehow it makes me think of the frog who slowly gets boiled… but in a good way, listening to it several times in a few hours or days or weeks, you have repeated a simple truth over and over, it becomes a part of who you are, like your 'code' is being over written. Music changes us, I don't understand how, but I really does something to us!
